7 Myths About Washroom Hygiene You Need to Know!

There is a lot of information online about washroom hygiene, but not all of it is accurate. In our latest blog, we address seven common hygiene myths.

Myth 1: ‘Hand dryers spread germs’

Fact: Hand dryers that work well are one of the best methods of preventing the spread of germs.

Damp, wet hands are one of the worst spreaders of harmful bacteria. So, make sure that your washrooms are fitted with hand dryers that provide a powerful blast of air, capable of drying hands in just seconds.

Myth 2: Hand dryers are not energy efficient

Fact: Modern hand dryers, for example, the Pebble Mini, stand proudly alongside other green washroom innovations, being energy efficient and preventing waste generated from paper towels.

So, contrary to the myth, hand dryers can actually save energy without increasing your bills.

Myth 3: Washrooms that smell fresh are clean

Fact: Pleasant odours can be misleading. Many air fresheners only mask the bad smell of a washroom.

To maintain the highest standards of hygiene, we advise implementing a comprehensive washroom maintenance system that includes air fresheners, deep-clean bacterial treatments, and additional measures. Contact the TWC Facilities team so we can discuss your requirements.

Myth 4: ‘Everyone knows how to wash their hands’

Fact: A Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) study revealed that over 80% of adults do not wash their hands for long enough to effectively kill germs.

The NHS highlights how washing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds is one of the best ways to protect yourself. Poor handwashing leads to the spread of viruses and bacteria that leads to illnesses, such as colds and flu. So, don’t give people a reason to fail to wash their hands by properly stocking hand washing supplies like soap, working soap dispensers and touch free hand dryers in your business.

Myth 5: ‘Viruses can’t stay alive on hard surfaces’

Fact: Viruses are capable of surviving on hard surfaces, such as computer keyboards, desks, and door handles, for extended periods. For instance, the influenza virus can remain viable for 2 to 8 hours on such surfaces.

Understandably, this may lead to hesitation when touching the door handle if you see others leaving a washroom without washing their hands.

Myth 6: Hand dryers take too long to dry hands

Fact: Many people have experienced using a hand dryer that does not dry their hands, leading to the temptation to use their clothing instead.

However, the latest generation of hand dryers such as the Pebble Mini can dry hands in a swift 12 seconds.

Myth 7: The ‘5 Second Rule’ is true

Fact: Studies have shown that germs reach food immediately after it hits the ground, disproving the 5-second rule. Personally, we would advise against taking food into the washrooms in the first place, but if you do it’s best to discard any you drop.
