It all began on a long-haul flight to Buenos Aires when our Managing Director, Martin Williams, struck up a conversation with a fellow passenger who ran a washroom services business in the South. This conversation planted a seed in Martin’s head about the potential to start his own business by bringing the same model to North Yorkshire. It seemed that there were no independent washroom services companies in the area, just the large conglomerates providing a poor experience for their customers.
With this in mind, in 2009 Martin and his wife Rachel bought a second-hand Ford Transit van BD56 MVC and went into business. This van eventually clocked up a whopping 250,000 miles for the business, equivalent to circling the globe 10 times!
Armed with a copy of the Yellow Pages (remember those?), Martin began making hundreds of calls to local businesses, introducing himself and his fledgling company to anyone who would listen. His persistence eventually paid off when he landed his first customer, a nursery in a local North Yorkshire village. We went on to service this nursery for many years until the nursery owner eventually retired.
Our first “office” was little more than a tiny room in a brick-built farm shed but as business picked up, the office and warehouse space had to grow. We upgraded to a second-hand converted shipping container for a time but eventually we settled into a more permanent base at The Stables, near Felixkirk - a milestone in the company's journey.
September 2013 marked the start of a new chapter for TWC Facilities: we expanded by acquiring Professional Washroom Services (Northern) Ltd. This brought not only lots of new customers, but also a fantastic team of new staff, further extending our reach and capabilities.
The success of TWC Facilities inspired us to take the next step in our growth journey, leading to the launch of TWC Draincare.
A few years later, in February 2018, Martin and the team had the opportunity to buy Crest Hygiene Services, another independent company, based in Halifax, as the previous owners had decided to retire. This new addition seamlessly fitted into our existing service areas and once again we warmly embraced new customers and staff members to the TWC family.
In August 2023, the TWC Group welcomed the well-established Nexus Hygiene into its portfolio, expanding its customer base and reinforcing its footprint across the North West of England.
The acquisition of Tulip Healthcare in April 2025 enabled TWC Group to broaden its regional coverage, strengthening its presence across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
In May 2025, City Healthcare Direct became the latest washroom services provider to join TWC Group, enabling the Group to expand its reach and serve clients across the Midlands and Thames Valley regions.
Building on our experience in delivering this service, we have launched TWC Pest Control as a specialist brand focused exclusively on pest control solutions.
Today, the original van's license plate, BD56 MVC, hangs proudly in the office as a tribute to the tenacity and spirit that built this company. From a single customer in 2009, TWC Facilities Ltd is now a business with over 5,000 happy customers, where our employees genuinely feel part of a great team, offering a local, efficient and reliable service that treats customers and staff like family.
